We still cosleep with our 16 month old. He has been sleeping with us for most of his life. I believe it started when he was 4 months old or so. I definitely did not plan on cosleeping. I had his crib set up all nice for him and everything was ready. But then we brought him home and then came the sleepless nights, every mom knows about those. At the time it was easier for him to sleep next to me. We were nursing and it made it a lot easier then stumbling all over the place in the middle of the night.
So after awhile it became the norm and he's sleeping with us. I actually love having him next to me knowing he's perfectly safe. Of course family and friends disagree. But what do they know. So I began researching the benefits of cosleeping, and this is what I found.

"
A number of large- and small-scale studies have examined the effects of cosleeping on children. Some have reported no discernible differences between solitary-sleeping and cosleeping peers; others link cosleeping to better behavior, greater levels of happiness, fewer tantrums, less fear and fewer psychiatric problems. In adulthood, children who once coslept have been found to have higher levels of "confidence, self-esteem and intimacy". No evidence was found that cosleeping children became clingy or dependent as a result.(4)
Mothers, too, may benefit psychologically from cosleeping. Many working mothers welcome the chance to reconnect with their babies after a day apart. Easy breastfeeding access means more sleep for both parties, resulting in a less stressed, less sleep-deprived mother. Moreover, many mothers who cosleep report that they enjoy the experience for the intimacy and security it provides."
I can tell you, my little man is the happiest independent little guy. In my eyes, I know all mothers love to boast their children. But he is doing great!
Now that I'm pregnant with number 2 I'm not sure if we are going to cosleep with him as well or not. But I know we will make the right decision when the time comes.
